Stallion Performance Tests
For many years, the Northrhine-Westphalian State Stud has run a stallion testing centre for riding horse stallions. Stallion performance tests in Germany are a matter of state authorities and regulated by the animal breeding law. They are based on the Federal Prescription on the Performance Test and Breeding Value Ascertainment in Horses. Since 2001, the stallions are tested in a 30-day suitability test on station and in a 70-day stallion performance test on station.
The performance tests in Warendorf are open to stallions owned by the State Stud as well as to privately owned stallions. In order to safeguard neutrality, the test is conducted by the manager of the Westphalian Horse Centre Dr. Antonius Bornemann. Two especially schooled riders from the State Stud and additional staff that is especially skilled in the formation of young horses take care of the daily training and grooming of the stallions.
In the course of the 30-day suitability test in March, the young stallions are tested particularly for their rideability. The interior values, the basic gaits when being ridden, the rideability and the jumping ability in free jumping are judged by the main trainer, test riders and the jury. 2003 was the first year the ranking of the stallions was abolished in Northrhine-Westphalia. In order to secure a good overall view on the talents of the young stallions, the three single marks for the three basic gaits, the rideability, the free jumping and the interior are published in a table.
In the 70-day stallion performance test which in Warendorf is offered in the period from August to October, the young stallions are tested in view to their character, their willingness to work, the jumping and dressage ability and in cross-country. The marks are given by the main trainer, a ground jury and test riders. The test result is statistically worked up and presented in a total index as well as in a dressage and a jumping index.
Training for an occupation in the German riding School in the NRW State Stud in Warendorf: Pferdewirt/in - Schwerpunkt Reiten (Professional rider/trainer)
The German Riding School as the centre of professional riding offers special opportunities in training.
Besides everyday routine around the horse, it is possible to get acquainted with versatile demands in the training work of this profession.
The approximately 50 horses, most of them licensed stallions who are a firm part of the schools stable, offer all possibilities to gain training experience in dressage and jumping up to the highest level. If they are particularly talented, the trainees are chosen for the station test and to assist in the care for various courses.
Thanks to the good relationship to the stud, the trainees can as well learn to drive. Since the courses are given by excellent instructors in all special fields around equitation, for the theoretical training as well the best opportunities are given. The German Riding School participates in a European Exchange Programme so that international experience can be gained in this profession.
The good co-operation between the stud and the German Riding School , embedded in the various institutions of Warendorf as the centre of equitation, offer a good start in the profession "Pferdewirt – Schwerpunkt Reiten”.
